!

Hi there.

I’m really excited that you’re here.

What I hope for this site is that you can learn, engage, and hopefully learn a few things that will help you leave the world a little better than you found it.

Lesson Forty: Holiday Refresher

It’s the most (wasteful) time of the year! Did you know that there is a 25% increase in garbage during the holidays?? The average Canadian will throw out 50kg of waste over the next month according to The Toronto Star.

My hopes is that we can shed a little bit of light on some holiday waste information and equip you with some fun alternatives/options.

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  1. What to recycle and what to throw out

  2. Gift wrapping alternatives

  3. Local stores I’m obsessed with

SECTION 1: RECYCLING POPULAR HOLIDAY WASTE ITEMS

Let’s look at some popular holiday waste items and see how they should be disposed of properly (at least in Toronto).

Most of the items from above go in the garbage. If you can try to reduce their use, even by a little bit, it can make a difference!

SECTION 2: WRAPPING PAPER ALTERNATIVES

There are a few options that are better for the planet than some of the traditional fancy wrapping paper. I’m taking about that glittery, felty, foily wrapping paper. My favourite go-tos are below. Click on the option to open some visual examples I used in my instagram story posts

  1. reusable giftbags

  2. newspaper

  3. old scarves or fabric

  4. kraft paper

SECTION 3: LOCAL STORES I HAVE LOVED SHOPPING AT

Ecotique Toronto: Boutique store specializing in organic and ethical products

Kid Icarus: Toronto print shop supporting local artists

Sonic Boom: Record/music store that has both new and second-hand selections

Logan & Finley: Environmental boutique

Kotn: Modern clothing store using only organic ethical Egyptian cotton

TYPE Bookstore: Independent bookstore across from Trinity Bellwoods

Thanks for following along everyone! I wish you a very warm and safe holiday season! And remember, one of the best presents you can give is wearing a mask and staying home!!

Also! If you want to know how to dispose of other items not on the list, or if you have a great local store suggestion, OR if want to share your holiday eco tips, send me a message below! I love hearing from you!
